Sustainable BSO

Inspiration

At the Sustainable BSO, children from 4 to 12 years old are involved in projects and themes relating to sustainability. Discovery and design learning about a fair sustainable future are central. Children learn about food skills for healthy growth, physical and cognitive development. They learn future-oriented thinking by thinking creatively about problems related to energy (transition) and climate, food, water and the environment. By starting early with children, the awareness of the impact of consumption behaviour of child, parent and society increases. Day-care Zonnelicht aims to inspire children and their parents to make respectful choices for environmentally conscious and sustainable behaviour.

Water

To introduce children to the essential source of (fresh) water for all life on earth. How much water do we actually consume? How does a grey water circuit work? How do you collect water and what can you use it for? What about the distribution of (fresh) water in the world? If we all save water, we can prevent water shortages.

Food

In the healthy kitchen, the experience is given to process healthy food from start to finish and to experience processes around a restaurant (from vegetables from the kitchen garden to making and serving hot food for children, parents and pedagogical staff). The curriculum revolves around food skills, preparing meals and running a small shop where meals can be taken out. Children learn what it is like to run a business and what it entails, and a healthy lifestyle is promoted. By consciously choosing sustainable options, you can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce land and water use and increase animal welfare and biodiversity.

Vegetable garden

In the kitchen garden, the growing processes of vegetables, fruit and herbs are followed from seed to harvest. Tending to the vegetable garden requires sowing, weeding, watering and harvesting; finally, to make meals and products. Food literacy is promoted through research into food aspects. Sowing, nurturing and harvesting provide knowledge and awareness of food and its impact on the environment.

(Children’s) workshop

In the (children’s) workshop, learning by discovery and design about a fair, sustainable future is central. By looking for solutions to practical issues in the (children’s) workshop, children learn to think creatively and out-of-the-box. We are facing an unknown future in which creative thinking is essential to solve future problems.

Nature

Knowledge about plants, animals, ecosystems and biodiversity are all addressed through lessons and programmes in the nature playground, the petting zoo and the kitchen garden. In addition, the schoolyard adjacent to the sports hall will be greened to contribute to a green, lively and sensory environment for children.

Recycle

Thinking about the impact that our consumption behaviour has on the environment can playfully help children to make conscious choices to become more sustainable. What is the impact of waste and what can you do to reduce this impact? Which materials and objects can be reused?

Energy

Which energy sources are future-proof? What is the energy transition? How does a grass roof work (construction, operation and maintenance)? How does a solar panel work and where does the energy it produces go? How does a heat pump work, where does it get its heat from? It is important that children become aware to make choices in the future so that (energy) resources of the world are not depleted.
